Hey guys! Hope you are doing well. I wanted to share a little about the most amazing workshop I went to last month. In case you aren't familiar with Nancy Gruskin go check her out at www.nancygruskin.com her work is so fun! As great as her work is, I was blown away with her workshop! The best way I can explain it was that it was an experience. I'm torn between telling you details about each day or not because I would hate to spoil it for you if you are here reading about her because you might do a workshop. If you are considering taking one of her workshops don't read any further - it will spoil the experience.
Part of what was so great about each day of the workshop was that each exercise built upon one another and each day built on one another and you never knew what it was going to lead to. You would be given a very interesting exercise and not have a clue what was coming next.
Here's an example. This is how day 1 went.
1. First exercise of the day was to get your paints out and she would call out something and you were to paint it life size (3 fruits, something from your pantry, an item from home you love, vase, etc) and you had to paint these things from memory.
2. Second exercise was to cut out your items, get in groups of 5 and arrange the items on the wall on a giant piece of paper (you can see this in the video below) using string as the table or table edge.
4. Third exercise she handed out a piece of paper with small boxes and we were to use 3 colors (1 for table, 1 for the objects, & 1 for the background) and we were to use the wall still life to create thumbnail paintings. This helps you see what value and composition will work best. I did NOT pick very good colors for this exercise.
5. Forth and final exercise of the day was to make a painting from 1 or 2 of your thumbnail sketches. ALL that was just ONE day! I was plumb exhausted but in the best way!
EACH day was like this - crazy good exercises after another. And before we would do an exercise she would sit us down and give us an amazingly inspiring slide show of artist doing what we were about to do. Here's some more pics of my work from the other days...
AND if you are still with me on this post and reading - here's a bonus because it must mean you are still interested in this topic. Here'a video I did about parts of the workshop.
